According to the magazine Industrial Fabric Products Review, April 2007, a study done at the University of Minnesota found that there are great savings to be had by using an awning. The following excerpt is based on their findings .
If you have a standard double clear window in a wood or vinyl frame you can achieve the following savings in Phoenix when cooling your house with a window:
Awning | Energy(kWh) | Energy Saved | Cost | Cost $ Saved |
None | 7438 | – | $870 | – |
12 month | 5905 | 21% | $691 | $179 |
Summer | 6011 | 19% | $703 | $167 |
How often should I clean my awnings?
Awnings should be cleaned once a year, depending on the conditions where you are (soot, pollution, foliage debris). Brush off the loose dirt, hose the awning down and clean with a mild soap (not detergent) in lukewarm water. Rinse thoroughly.
Don’t use chlorine products (bleach) to scrub an awning – it can rot the awning over time.
